Day 4

Today was a really fun day! We went on a train to Aguilas, a beach town about an hour away from Lorca. When we arrived we walked to the beach. The Spanish children thought it was very cold but we thought it was warm! Then we went to an aquarium. After that we hiked all the way up to a castle. When we got there, a lovely lunch was waiting for us. We enjoyed some paella overlooking the sea! Finally we had a look around the castle and admired the beautiful views of Aguilas. What a day! We are sad that tomorrow is our last day!

Day 3:

Today was another exciting school day. We arrived at school and worked with the older children (PE, Maths and English). After lessons and a quick snack we set off with the year 6 children to have a walking tour around Lorca! Lorca is a beautiful town and the Spanish children helped us by translating the tour guide's speech. Then, we returned to school and had lunch. This time it was pasta! In the evening, we enjoyed dinner at an Italian restaurant. Finally we had some time in the hotel to be with our friends and eat some snacks.

Day 2

Monday 18th January

Today we had our first day at a Spanish school. First we enjoyed a lovely buffet breakfast at the hotel, we were spoilt for choice! Then we were invited to a welcome ceremony in the school where we saw lots of Spanish dancing! Next we had a P.E, Maths and English lesson, they were very different to lessons in Redhills, but we enjoyed joining in and helping others with English words. For lunch the school provided us with a tasty beef stew and salad. After lunch, we went on a coach to Lorca Castle. It was very entertaining and we had the place to ourselves! Then we went to a supermarket (supermarcado!) and bought some snacks with our euros! Finally, we went out to a pizzeria for dinner and then it was time for bed... What a long (but enjoyable) day!

Sunday 17th January

We arrived safely in Lorca after a long journey. The children behaved impeccably in the taxis, airport and on the plane. Several passengers remarked upon the sensible behaviour of the children. We arrived at the hotel around 7pm. The children settled into their rooms and got ready for dinner in the hotel. We then enjoyed a delicious 3 course meal! Everyone then contacted home and enjoyed a well-earned rest! Lets see what tomorrow brings!

Fantastic Links with Spain And Latvia

Redhills School had the fantastic opportunity to make links with schools in Spain and Lativa through ERASMUS. We have already been hosts for teachers and pupils from Andres Garcia School in Lorca, Spain and Riga Classical Gymnasium school in Riga, Latvia.

Three of our own teachers visited Riga in Latvia in November 2015, making arrangements for a group of our own Year 6 children to visit in March 2016. Mrs Carter, Ms Brown and Miss Easterbook spent time in Riga Classical Gymnasium school observing lessons and talking to students and staff.  They reported that it was very interesting to see children learning English as a second language. In fact, in Riga, primary children learn three languages, Latvian, Russian and English. The children and staff at Riga Classical Gymnasium were very enthusiastic about England and wanted to know all about our country and school. They are looking forward to hosting children from Redhills in March. Mrs Carter, Ms Brown and Miss Easterbrook spent some time visiting the city of Riga and finding some interesting places to take the children when they visit in March.

The ERASMUS project aims to promote links between countries, to encourage learning about each others countries and cultures, and improving global awareness.

Three of our own teachers visited Lorca Spain in October 2015, making arrangements for a group of our own Year 6 children to visit in January 2016. So far, they have been in school making presentations to children from Lorca School, as well as children from other parts of Spain, including Almeria, Zamora and the Canary Islands. Over the next few days, they will be helping teach English in different lessons including Science!
