Cherry - Reception

Something very exciting has been happening in Reception! We have been looking after some eggs, and when we came into school today they had hatched! We have got four fluffy chicks in the middle room, which we have enjoyed looking at and holding (carefully). We have been coming up with names for our new feathered friends, and writing signs to make sure that nobody bumps into the incubator! We will be sad to see them go, but we know that they are going to be very happy with Mrs Cook!
We have also been lucky enough to have been visited by 4 baby rabbits!

We enjoyed our visit from the Easter Bunny today!

Last week we celebrated World Book Day. The children were excited to come in dressed as their favourite book characters, and we were lucky enough to have a reading from authors Wavey and Snotts! It was a lovely day and the children enjoyed talking about books and stories.
When we came back from half term something very strange had happened in the classroom! There were vegetables that had been captured on the table! This must have been the work of The Evil Pea! We needed Supertato to come to their rescue!

Lots of the children were talking about their pets at home and pretending to be all sorts of different animals so we quickly began our new learning on Pets! We used the story 'The Great Pet Sale' as a place to begin. We have had a great time and have been very busy learning. We have met and spoken about a hamster, guinea pig and fish. We were lucky enough to be visited by a vet and had a chance to see a giant flea and a real worm from an animal's body. We then transformed into vets ourselves in the role play. We also been reading clues to find 'lost' pets in our classroom and have been asking our friends about their favourite pets. We have been making prescriptions for our animal patients in the mud kitchen using what we know about adding. We've made our own pets out of playdough and have written something about them to get them into our classroom art gallery. A busy time all round!

This half term we have begun by doing 2 Fairy tales- The Three Little Pigs and The Billy Goats Gruff. This has given us plenty of opportunities to learn about all of the key areas in the EYFS. We've been building bridges, leaving messages for the pigs and retelling the story in a slimy 'trolly' sand tray just to name a few!

We worked so hard on our Nativity that we even made the news! Here we are!

We have been enjoying our book 'We are going on a bear hunt'. We love joining in with it and doing the actions. Here is some of what we have been up to in our play jobs about this book.

We are starting the new half term by reading The Hungry Caterpillar. We have lots of learning opportunities on our Play Job board focused around this story.

We turned into very hungry caterpillars and made our own fruit skewers using the food from the story. We had to be very careful when we were chopping using the knife and concentrated very carefully. We enjoyed eating our healthy snacks at the end!

The children have had a very successful first half term, as they have begun to learn the routines of Redhills School. They have made lots of new friends, and have had lots of opportunities to play and learn with them. Please continue to come to our Class Page as the year progresses to look at pictures and read updates on what we have been up to!

We were lucky enough to have a visit from Gavin the paramedic. He talked to us about his ambulance and what we should do in an emergency. We even got to have a look around the ambulance and have a ride on the lift!

We are very active in Reception. We do Soft Play once a week, every morning we have a focused Daily Physical session, we have PE lessons on Thursdays with Mr Steer and we often go out into the playground to use the bikes and scooters.
To get ready to write we have lots of activities available that help us build up our finger strength and fine motor control.
